Hi Liz - it would be interesting to hear in more detail your mixed feelings about gamification in libraries. I'm from a public library, and a few of us here are pushing and promoting the concept of games / gaming in our library for several services - children’s, youth and reference/reader advisory.
It was interesting to think about the possible gamification of some of our library services and events (not necessarily are all these services or events online), and what to keep in mind when doing so - as you wrote: "game mechanics are being tacked on to practically everything these days, almost as an afterthought. The resulting experience, distastefully shallow and frankly venial, threatens to overshadow the deeper value of well-designed, substantive games that entertain through genuine engagement, demand creative thinking, and lend insight into the human condition through vivid storytelling . . ."
