Why do I have to pay to participate in this seminar? While World of Warcraft has free trials the free trials do not provide full chat function. To participate in this seminar you will need to be able to chat with the other participants.
Why meet in World of Warcraft? The seminar could have taken place in any of a number of online game environments. World of Warcraft was chosen because it has less technology barriers than many of the other online games, and works well for both pcs and macs, and a lot of people already have a subscription to the game.
Why have this seminar at all?Millions of people around the world use these games environments as social environments. These environments would seem to have possible used to public libraries, especially around the areas of readers advisory services. Meeting in the game gives the opportunity to try a few things out
Will I be able to participate in this seminar from my work place?Probably not. You will need a computer with World of Warcraft installed on it, and you probably won't find that at work. Most internet and games cafes will have World of Warcraft, or you could install it on your own computer.
What if I don't live in New South Wales?Any library worker from any library, anywhere is welcome to participate. You just
need to register, and set up a toon.
What if I need help getting started?Firstly check out the extensive help at
WoWwiki or
Thottbot.
WoWhead is another excellent resource. You can event search the internet for help. You can also call on Franticread for in game help, or e-mail ellenforsyth@gmail.com
Why do I have to have an Alliance toon - I want to be an Orc?In World of Warcraft only races on the same "side" can communicate, so for this seminar to work you have to all be the one "side". Alliance was chosen. You can set up an Orc for use in the game another time.
What is the fastest way to get started? As the seminar starts in Stormwind, the human capital, the fasted way is to select a human toon. That way you only have a short run to Stormwind. You are welcome to choose another race, but if you choose a gnome, dwarf, draenal or night elf you will need to allow at least an hour of play to be able to reach Stormwind safely. Have fun with customising your toon.
When I have set up my toon do I go straight to Stormwind? It would be a good idea to try a few quests, just to get a feel for the early stages of the game. This game has very different experiences depending on what level you are. If you can get your character above level one you will be a little safer.
Why do I need to join a guild for this seminar?Guilds have a chat function so that anyone online in the guild can participate, no matter where they are in the game. It means if people are separated during the seminar they will still be able to follow the discussions.
How will I know who is really talking in this seminar? As part of the registration you will find out the other participants. As well the speakers will identify themselves by their names as well as their game names. Note this is really unusual. In World of Warcraft you always refer to people by their in game names, so this seminar will be going against that.
When you say speakers what do you really mean? The seminar will be conducted using
instant messaging. Where do I buy the t-shirt?The
NSW Reference and Information Services Group has designed some t-shirts to celebrate these seminars. You can
buy them from here.
lol and roflIn online games some abbreviations are used. Lol means laugh out loud and you can use than either to be ironic or when someone has been funny. It also can be used in lots of other instances as well. rofl is roll on the floor laughing. The presenters will decide the amount of jargon they want to use, as it may be part of a point they are making.
Will the guild exist after the game? That will depend on interest. If enough people are interested, it will continue.
